We provide Governors/Trustees with a flexible, value for money, centralised, in house and online training and development programme which takes account of statutory and legal requirements and national/local developments in leadership and governance.
Our key aim is to support the development of skills and understanding across the three core governance functions:
- Setting the strategic direction – ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
- Creating robust accountability – holding leaders to account for educational performance and the performance management of staff
- Overseeing financial performance – ensuring solvency and effective financial management
We have a blended approach to training and development to ensure we meet the needs of all Governors/Trustees. We offer:
Centralised face to face sessions:
A suite of centralised face to face sessions offered at a range of venues/times. The programme includes governance role specific sessions (including challenge, chairing, finance, induction, monitoring, Ofsted, safer recruitment) and subject/area specific sessions (including safeguarding GDPR, health and safety, attendance, SEND). The annually reviewed programme ensures the offer remains current and supports Governance in a changing environment.
In-house bespoke sessions:
Provided just for your Governors/Trustees, written to meet your specific circumstances and needs. This can be provided face to face, virtually or via online materials on a range of subjects/issues.
Online training:
Provided though the National Governance Association (NGA) Learning Link. This offer is only available to schools who purchase the appropriate SLA.
Termly briefings for Chairs:
Open to Chairs and Vice Chairs who purchase any one of the EDGS SLAs. Briefings are provided face to face and are also available electronically.
We are developing our online and virtual training offer to ensure there is a method of delivery and access to training to suit all needs.

Service Level Agreements (SLA)
We offer three different SLA options:
Package 1:
- Unlimited attendance at centralised sessions detailed in the Training & Development Programme
- Provision of one in house bespoke session
Package 2:
- Unlimited participation in core Induction for New Governors and Safeguarding and Child Protection – an introduction for Governors/Trustees
An additional charge is payable per Governor for attendance at any other sessions.
An additional subsidised charge is payable per Governor for attendance on the Safer Recruitment Training – full course.
- Provision of one bespoke session
- Subscription to NGA Learning Link
Package 3:
- Participation in 15 core sessions detailed in the Programme for School and Academy Governor Training excluding the Safer Recruitment Training – full course
An additional charge is payable per Governor for attendance at additional sessions above the 15.
An additional subsidised charge is payable per Governor for attendance on the Safer Recruitment Training – full course.

- Subscription to NGA Learning Link
Schools and academies who have not purchased an SLA, can ‘pay-as-you-go’ for centralised sessions or in-house bespoke sessions. Please contact us for a quotation.
