Using sketchbooks in the primary art curriculum ART904
Date and time
11/03/2025
1:00 PM - 4:30 PM
Format:
Course Outline
Sketchbooks are an essential part of the art and design curriculum and developing a âhabit of useâ for these should be developed in Key Stage 1 and 2. This session is designed to give participants the confidence to use sketchbooks to support the learning journey. It will explore how sketchbooks can be used to help pupils to think, generate ideas, and experiment, and to allow teachers to track individual progress, and review and revisit ideas. This course will look at art history using a diverse range of practitioners, to show how ideas are generated in a range of professions through drawing/sketching. The practical hands-on 'making' element in this course will model how to encourage the creative process to staff and pupils and will allow participants to develop their own practical skills through experiencing some of the ways that learners could use their sketchbooks. Participants will be encouraged to bring along examples of books from their own school setting, to share with others in a supportive and non-judgemental way. Following the course, participants will have access to a wide range of relevant and useful resources through a padlet board.

2:00 PM - 4:00 PM
Format:
Course Outline
Since the publication of the Ofsted inspection framework in 2019, schools have focused time and energy around the development of their curricula and subject implementation in the classroom. As Ofsted moves towards focusing on the impact of the curriculum, we are encouraging head teachers and subject leaders to come together to consider how we can tell if the curriculum is having an impact. Using insights from recent Ofsted inspections, we will reflect upon how we can ensure progress is being made and the planned curriculum content and sequence is leading to positive impact in learning. Together we will discuss whether we are asking the right questions around our curriculum design and lesson content, whether teaching approaches are working well and, perhaps most importantly whether the questions we ask of the children around what they have learnt and remembered really give us insight into how the curriculum is working. Prior to this course, the course facilitator will be in touch to ask you to bring evidence that shows impact in maths, so good practise can be shared and collaborative discussions can take place.Â

Recently, OFSTED published their subject report for English - Telling the Story. Within this schools are encouraged to select the books they use as core texts on the basis of their literary merit. This session has been created to support teachers in selecting and using those high quality texts in the primary classroom . It will provide teachers with an overview of Bob Cox's recent book - Opening Doors to Ambitious Primary English - and allow us to unpick some of the key messages around using challenging texts with all pupils. By providing some insight into the much acclaimed Opening Doors approach, teachers will be encouraged to reflect on their current book selection and consider whether these books support children in exploring some of the key concepts, themes and ideas of literature. Together we will unpick the approaches suggested and explore how these could be included in your own school's reading curriculum. Participants will leave the session with a good understanding of the Opening Doors approach,  a desire to use challenging texts with all pupils, and a wealth of text suggestions, ideas and strategies to use in their own classrooms.

Dust off the encyclopaedias: tackling the challenge of non-fiction ENG916
Date and time
01/05/2025
3:45 PM - 5:15 PM
Format:
Course Outline
Encyclopaedias are defunct - the internet has all but made them redundant. And yet children pore over their pages and become immersed in the wealth of information they can contain. So much of the non fiction material we use in primary school is narrative based that children are often unsure how to tackle the more traditional non-narrative non fiction. Many of the struggles they have around reading when moving into KS3 stem from their lack of familiarity with 'textbook' style texts. But we can begin to address this by dusting off those encyclopaedias and looking at how to actively engage with these texts types. This asynchronous session is ideal for early career teachers and is designed to support them in developing their toolkits of activities to support reading using non fiction texts.

This course will provide an overview of the types of thinking which are included in EF, and introduce ways to assess a learnerâs EF strengths and weaknesses. There will be opportunities to consider and discuss effective ways to provide support for learners with difficulties in EF.
