Durham Local Authority provides appropriate body services for early career teachers in their induction period (ECT). We also provide advice and guidance to develop, nurture and retain our new teachers to the profession through a range of courses and in school support available through the school education SLA.
As an Appropriate Body, our service offer includes:
- Carrying out pre-induction checks and registration for schools, academies and settings who have appointed an early career teacher
- ECF fidelity checking dependent on the type of ECF-based induction being delivered
- Registering and reporting to the Teacher Regulation Agency
- Providing briefings to Induction Tutors, Mentors and ECTs at the start of the year on the Induction process and the role of the Appropriate Body
- Providing an ECT Induction Handbook
- Supporting Induction Tutors and ECTs throughout the induction process through termly network meetings
- Providing phone/email support for early career teachers, Induction Tutors and Head Teachers / Principals
- Monitoring the progress of early career teachers during their induction
- Providing templates for all assessment forms
- Quality assuring assessment reports against the Teachers’ Standards
- Conducting quality assurance visits with a sample of the cohort of registered ECTs
- Providing advice and guidance where ECTs are not making satisfactory progress against the Teachers’ Standards
- Providing a ‘named person’ for ECTs who require confidential support and guidance
- Making decisions on the outcome of statutory induction for ECTs in liaison with the Head Teacher and notifying the Teacher Regulation Agency
Bespoke, school based and individualised CPD support for ECTs, Mentors and Induction Tutor can be provided on request through Education Durham’s Support and Development services.
The cost for Appropriate Body Services of your currently registered ECT(s) is £60 per ECT per term.

Please note that we will be offering Appropriate Body Services to their existing registered ECTs up until July 2024.
For 2024/25 onwards, ECT Induction services will be offered by your local Teaching School Hub.
