Newly qualified teacher programme (secondary)

This year’s NQT induction programme will run across five afternoon sessions during the academic year. The revised schedule has been devised in consultation with NQTs and their schools / academies. The sessions take place on Thursday afternoons so that schools can consider planning this into the timetable for their NQTs. The content of each session reflects the needs of an NQT overall and at specific points during the year. The programme has also been designed in response to feedback from previous NQTs, induction tutors, senior leaders and NQT assessment reports.

Each afternoon consists of two sessions, led by experienced teachers and advisors within Education Durham. There are also opportunities planned within the programme for NQTs to make links with the Subject Specialist Leads within the local authority.

We can also offer, this year, a twilight programme for those NQTs who want to participate in induction sessions outside their school day. Session 1 of the afternoon programme will be offered as a twilight session on each day of the programme to allow flexibility.

The programme offers NQTs the opportunity to:

  • engage with up to date educational thinking
  • work with experienced teachers and colleagues from across Education Durham
  • reflect on their current practice
  • share experiences with others
  • consider the impact of new and established practical strategies
  • be aware of the research findings and evidence base of the concepts discussed

The programme is linked specifically to the Teachers’ Standards and the upcoming Early Career Framework core areas. Each session will encourage the NQTs to be reflected in terms of their progress towards these standards and how specific tasks and activities could be used as evidence within their portfolios.

Finally, the programme offers our NQTs the opportunity to network with other new teachers in the region who are also beginning their careers in teaching. We recognise the value of this and ensure this is an integral part of the programme as we acknowledge the value of sharing experiences and forming professional relationships with teachers from other schools, academies and contexts.
