There are now twice as many girls than boys choosing to continue with the subject at KS4. In KS5 the gap is even bigger. Girls achieve higher results and the gap between genders in their final grades is significant. Schools can address this problem with targeted intervention, creative curriculum design and adjusting teaching styles. This course will help you understand the issues, and to address them by looking at the evidence, discussing how you can develop more inclusive learning models at all key stages and make the subject meaningful, relevant and engaging to learners of today. Educational research is clear that asking more questions to more students in more depth is an essential component of effective teaching. Through questioning we should seek to expand the ‘ratio’ of pupil participation in lessons as well as developing subject specific oracy. Questioning provides the opportunity for a dialogue in which students are challenged - it enables us to assess pupil thinking. Above all, effective questioning allows us to get feedback as to how well we have taught the material – it allows us to modify our teaching by checking for understanding and to uncover pupils’ misconceptions – so we can adapt our teaching in a responsive and purposeful way. One of the ways teachers explain new ideas is with the use of well-chosen and accessible examples and narratives that can be extremely helpful in introducing new concepts. Complex tasks often require scaffolding: beginning with a simplified or limited version of tasks to make these manageable.
