Special schools

Education Durham can offer the following support through its service level agreement for special schools:

Pupils at a special school

Teaching and learning

  • Continuous professional development (CPD) – aspects of teaching and learning
  • learning outside the classroom and use of school grounds
  • specific early years support
  • individual coaching support for teachers
  • CPD for support staff – learning support assistants (LSA), cover supervisors etc.
  • newly qualified teachers support
  • teachers new to special schools

Curriculum

  • targeted reviews – curriculum design and leadership, early years foundation stage , 16 – 19 study programmes, learning and teaching, outcomes, personal development, behaviour and well-being
  • curriculum intent and implementation  – designing a curriculum for all ages in your context

Subject specific

(including literacy, numeracy, sex and relationship education and Social, moral, spiritual and cultural)

  • subject specialised support – through networks, individual school contracts, specialist leads in the main subject areas and coaching sessions
  • subject reviews
  • statutory support for social, moral, spiritual and cultural and religious studies and bespoke support for subjects like sex and relationship education and music

Assessment and moderation

  • CPD on aspects of assessment and standards
  • review of assessment systems and impact
  • moderation across schools of pupil work, assessment and standards

Leadership development

  • individual or group mid-leader / senior leader support
  • CPD – for both new and experienced leaders across the school
  • individual coaching support for leaders
  • support for the changing national picture and inspection framework

Behaviour management

  • CPD on aspects of promoting positive behaviour for effective learning and managing challenging behaviour
  • CPD specific for support staff – LSAs, lunchtime supervisors etc.

Safeguarding

  • safeguarding reviews and specialist advice
  • e-safety CPD and school and/or website audit

Pupil premium

  • pupil premium reviews and support
  • catch up funding review and support
