Construction Services and Construction Consultancy Services have completed a new extension at West Cornforth Primary, which will facilitate a 26 place nursery which includes a playroom, nursery toilet, kitchen area, cloaks, store and an office.
In addition, an external covered play area has been formed, adjacent the nursery room. As well as offering a safe outdoor play space, the installation of roller shutters enables it to be used as an external store. The extension has been located adjacent to the existing early year’s provision.
A time capsule was buried during construction which has references to the Covid-19 pandemic of 2020-21 which included a piece of work from every class (letter, what life is like etc), photo of lockdown bubbles, school sweatshirt, hand gel and mask, Covid-19 test booklet and a copy of the newspaper with Boris’ roadmap out of the second lockdown as the headline.
The head teacher stated,
On behalf of the staff and governors, I would like to thank Durham County Council for their excellent project management. Special thanks go to Nigel and David, who supported the project on a daily basis and worked with the staff to ensure the extension suited all needs. I can’t believe how lucky we are to have such a fantastic addition to our building, and so many quality resources.
The purpose of the extension was to provide extra nursery places, wrap around and holiday care. I am proud to say, our numbers are increasing. Due to the hardworking and dedicated Ducklings staff, we are getting enquiries from residents outside of West Cornforth- including Ferryhill and Spennymoor. We are all working hard to ensure the project will be a success.’
